Sports have long been seen as the best way to make China strong again. Accomplishments in sports moreover show how strong a nation is. After 1949, there was little distinction between sports, military training and production. A famous Chinese athlete was Mao, who lovede to swim and crossed the Yangzi river in 1966. When the women's volleyball team won the world title in 1981, many Chinese considered this as the first sign that they made their mark again in the world. The organization of the Olympics in 2008 is seen as final proof of China's prowess in sports.
